Building Better Physician Leaders

A how-to with our leadership and learning executive director

In this Short Answer, we asked Executive Director of Global Leadership and Learning Gina Cronin how Cleveland Clinic builds better physician leaders. Here’s what she had to say:

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. Policy

Healthcare is a unique environment because of the high degrees of stress and burnout our physicians and providers can face. Because we are a physician-led organization, our leaders at the highest level understand the challenges clinicians face in the current healthcare environment.

We know that our professional staff place a great value on mentorship and career coaching and how important to success that can be in an academic medical environment, so we have developed formal and informal programs designed to ensure our physicians know how to coach and be coached.

We also have a separate program for emerging physician leaders called LEAD FORWARD that offers potential leaders a five-day immersion into business topics like finance, contextual intelligence, assessment and more. Our own physician leaders act as faculty and participate in authentic, vulnerable panels that highlight challenges unique to their roles.

We also believe strongly that good physician leadership improves healthcare overall, and so we share these best practices with external and emerging physician leaders and non-clinicians alike through our Global Executive Education programs, which range from three-day intensives to two-month fellowships.
