Edward C. Benzel, MD (Staff’99), a dedicated leader whose contributions have impacted countless lives, and Eric A. Klein, MD (U’86), a pioneer whose work has redefined his field, represent the depth of experience and innovation among our alumni. Joining them are two emerging leaders: Lisa Hickman, MD (OB/GYN’17, UG/PS’20), whose early career demonstrates a commitment to innovation and compassionate care, and Tamara Strohm, MD (N’17), whose research and mentorship are shaping the future. These four awardees exemplify the values and mission of Cleveland Clinic.
Service Award – Edward C. Benzel, MD
Shaping the Neurological Institute, mentoring generations of leaders, and building a global spine community
Edward C. Benzel, MD (Staff’99), Emeritus Chair of Neurosurgery, is celebrated for his visionary leadership and mentorship. As a co-architect of Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute, Dr. Benzel fostered a culture of collaboration and innovation. His work in spinal biomechanics and complex deformity surgery has advanced the field globally.
Dr. Benzel’s legacy includes founding the World Spinal Column Society and authoring seminal textbooks. “He’s everything to everyone,” says Michael Steinmetz, MD (NS'05), current Chair of Neurosurgery. Even in retirement, Dr. Benzel continues to mentor and inspire, reminding us all: “Leadership is about empowering others to succeed.”
Special Achievement Award – Eric A. Klein, MD
Shaping the future of urology through care, innovation, research, and teaching

Eric A. Klein, MD (U’86), Chair Emeritus of the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute, is a global leader in prostate cancer care and research. Over his 40-year Cleveland Clinic career, Dr. Klein advanced diagnostic tools, clinical trials, and surgical techniques that transformed urologic oncology. Under his leadership, the institute became the No. 1-ranked center for urology worldwide.
Dr. Klein’s prolific research and tenure as editor of Urology have influenced generations of physicians. “He’s a legend in our field,” says mentee Nima Almassi, MD (S’13/U’18).
Since retiring, Dr. Klein has pivoted to new opportunities, including his work with biotech company GRAIL, where he continues advancing early cancer detection technologies. Dr. Klein reflects, “When you compete with yourself to be the best you can be, the sky is the limit.”
Early Career Award – Lisa Hickman, MD
Setting new standards for pelvic floor disorder care through clinical innovation, pioneering research, and mentorship
Lisa Hickman, MD (OB/GYN’17, UG/PS’20), is transforming care for women with postpartum pelvic floor disorders. While in residency at Cleveland Clinic, she founded the Postpartum Care Clinic, addressing critical gaps in urogynecologic care. Now at Ohio State University, she leads the Childbirth Pelvic Floor Disorders Clinic and drives national research collaborations.
Dr. Hickman’s mentorship and groundbreaking research are shaping the field. “She consistently seeks opportunities to lead, innovate, and improve women’s health outcomes,” says Beri Ridgeway, MD (UG/PS’09). Dr. Hickman credits her Cleveland Clinic training for instilling the skills and vision to “build something impactful.”

Early Career Award – Tamara Strohm, MD
Advancing hands-on neurological training with compassion, vision, and a Cleveland Clinic legacy
Tamara Strohm, MD (N’17), is redefining neurological education as Fellowship Director for Neurocritical Care at UNC. She has developed simulation workshops, mentorship programs, and innovative training tools, including ultrasound-guided lumbar puncture techniques now adopted nationally.
Dr. Strohm’s passion for teaching was evident during her Cleveland Clinic residency, where she earned multiple teaching awards. “She embodies the values we strive to instill — leadership, teaching, and service,” says mentor MaryAnn Mays, MD (IM’94, N’97, NMUSC’98). Dr. Strohm’s dedication to mentorship ensures her influence will resonate for generations.
Drs. Benzel, Klein, Hickman, and Strohm exemplify Cleveland Clinic’s core values of innovation, mentorship, and dedication to improving patient care. Their contributions highlight the transformative potential of physicians who push the boundaries of their specialties while fostering growth in others.
As these distinguished alumni continue to influence medicine on a global scale, their work underscores the lasting impact of leadership and excellence in healthcare.
