and improving hospital design. She is known for her ability to lead successful nursing operations and positive outcomes in the areas of patient experience, patient safety and infection prevention.

“On behalf of the Cleveland Clinic Zielony Nursing Institute, we are extremely pleased to welcome Janet to our leadership team,” says K. Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NE-BC, Executive Chief Nursing Officer, Cleveland Clinic. “She is a proven leader, who has a long track record of success in both healthcare operations and nursing practice, and I feel her skills and expertise, coupled with her tenacity and passion for the nursing profession, make her a great fit for our Lutheran nursing organization.”

Dynamic leader with 30 years experience

Having spent more than 30 years in various healthcare and nursing leadership positions, Shuster is a veteran when it comes to hospital operations, nursing practice and quality improvement.

She began her career in nursing at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Throughout the years, she garnered clinical expertise in acute care nursing, behavioral health nursing and perioperative services, and served in various manager and director roles within several healthcare systems in the states of Illinois and Ohio.

When asked about her keys to leadership success, Schuster notes, “I keep ethical principles at the forefront of all of my decisions and strive to continually promote interpersonal communication internally and externally – among physicians, organizational leaders, staff, caregivers and community stakeholders.”

She adds that her philosophy for nursing practice is grounded on commitment to patient-centered care and patient safety – topics she often presents on in various health and education settings.

Keeping patient safety at the forefront

“With patient safety at the top of her priority list, Schuster will no doubt continue the great success Lutheran Hospital has exemplified in this area,” Dr. Hancock adds.

Recently, Lutheran Hospital achieved national recognition as one of the safest hospitals in the U.S. And prior to her current role, Schuster served as Lutheran’s director of quality.

Schuster is an advanced board-certified nurse executive and holds two prominent healthcare quality certifications from the National Association for Healthcare Quality and the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality.

She holds a Master of Business Administration degree from John Carroll University and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from St. John College/Ursuline College. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Healthcare Systems Leadership from Chamberlain College of Nursing. Schuster started in her new position in late 2015.
