Most gynecologists face dilemmas in diagnosing and treating endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids on a daily basis.

“While the basics of management are understood, once you get into the nuances of treatment, the path forward can become very unclear,” says M. Jean Uy-Kroh, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Women’s Health Institute and the Surgical Subspecialty Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. “There is so much information in the literature, and so many controversies that it is even hard for highly experienced ob/gyns to know what to do.”

To deepen understanding of these common diseases and help colleagues make well informed treatment decisions, Dr. Uy-Kroh and Roseanne Kho, MD, Director of Benign Gynecologic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic (Ohio), have designed a comprehensive two-day program to be held at Cleveland Clinic on Aug. 25 and 26.

A faculty of heavy hitters

The faculty for “Controversies in Endometriosis, Adenomyosis and Fibroids” is comprised of world-renowned experts who treat these conditions on a daily basis.

“We have here at the Cleveland Clinic an amazing group of experts in the fields of chronic pelvic pain, benign and reproductive surgery and oncology who can bring in the important considerations in the management of patients with these conditions. They are prepared to tell us where the controversies lie and shed light on new treatment options,” says Dr. Kho.

International guest faculty includes Mauricio Abrao, MD, a pioneer and strong advocate for the use of preoperative imaging for deep infiltrating endometriosis.

Dr. Kho is known nationally and internationally for advancing minimally invasive surgery for benign vaginal conditions.  Dr. Uy-Kroh, specializes in endometriosis surgery and pelvic pain and established the Cleveland Clinic’s multidisciplinary Chronic Pelvic Pain Center.

The additional 14 Cleveland Clinic faculty members include:

Tommaso Falcone, MD, Chairman of Ob/Gyn and Women’s Health Institute. Dr. Falcone is a specialist in reproductive medicine and endometriosis.

Linda Bradley, MD, Vice Chair of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health Institute; Director of the Fibroid and Menstrual Disorders Center; and Director of Hysteroscopic Services. She is an expert in the understanding and treatment of fibroids.

Rebecca Flyckt, MD, an expert in reproductive medicine and Director of the Fertility Preservation and Cancer Program. She is deeply involved in Cleveland Clinic’s uterine transplant program.

Chad Michener, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Section of Gynecologic Oncology. He is known for pushing the envelope in single-incision laparoscopy for the management of large pelvic masses.

Personal interaction encouraged

Rather than following a strict didactic format, the course has built in ample opportunity to engage with the experts.

“We designed the program to be highly interactive with a lot of time for discussion of complex cases with Q&A,” says Dr. Kho.

In addition to lectures, surgery videos and complex case scenarios will be presented, followed by panel discussions.
